What Is E471, Really?

Halal 360 carries a reference guide of 525 food additives — E-numbers and named entries alike — each with its category, a plain-language description and a Halal classification.

An additive is not the whole product. An additive can have its own classification, but that does not automatically determine the Halal status of the complete food product — which may also depend on other ingredients, processing, source and certification.

Not every product has a scannable barcode, and not every label is easy to read. Halal 360 gives you three ways to get to the same answer.

01 — Scan the barcode

The fastest route. Point the camera, and Halal 360 looks the product up and assesses what it finds.

02 — Photograph the label

No barcode, or the product isn’t in the database? Take a photo of the ingredient list and Halal 360 reads the text from it.

03 — Type it in

Paste or type an ingredient list yourself and get the same ingredient and additive breakdown.

Halal 360 doesn’t ask you to take its word for it. Every result names the information it was built from.

External service

Product Database

Product name, brand, barcode, ingredients, nutrition and images come from Open Food Facts, an open collaborative food database. Availability and completeness can vary by product.

On device

Halal 360 Additive Database

Reference information for E-numbers and other food additives — E100, E120, E322, E471 and more. Halal classifications come from Halal 360’s own rules and reference data.

Halal 360 is an information tool. It helps you understand food products using available product, ingredient, additive and certification information. No. Halal 360 provides information and classifications based on available data. Always consider the product packaging and relevant certification when necessary, and consult qualified Islamic scholars for definitive rulings.

The product may not yet exist in the available product database. You can report it from inside the app to help improve the information available in Halal 360 — or photograph the ingredient label instead and let Halal 360 read it directly.

It indicates that the available information requires further consideration or verification — commonly because an ingredient can come from either a plant or an animal source.

No. Unknown means there isn’t enough reliable information to determine the classification. The absence of certification information does not automatically mean a product is Haram.

You can create a personal preference so an additive is highlighted for you, but this does not change Halal 360’s underlying classification.
